A Chaya plant, also known as Cnidoscolus aconitifolius, is a robust and perennial shrub that can reach height of 6 to 8 feet (1.8 to 2.4 meters). It has large, deeply lobed leaves that resemble the shape of a hand with elongated fingers. The leaves are bright green and can grown up to 6 inches (15 centimeters) long. Chaya plants have a dense and bushy growth habit with multiple stems branching out from the base.

The plant has a tropical origin and thrives in warm climates, particularly in regions with mild winters. It is known for its resilience and ability to tolerate a wide range of soil conditions. Chaya plants also exhibit excellent drought tolerance, making them suitable for arid environments.

Chaya is primarily cultivated for its edible leaves, which are highly nutritious and valued for their health benefits. The plant produces small clusters of inconspicuous flowers, typically white or pale yellow in color, but they are not a prominent feature of the plant.

Due to its nutritional value and versatility in cooking, Chaya has gained popularity in various culinary traditions, particularly in Mexico and Central America.
